Mortality of Dungeness crabs due to lost traps and the cost benefit of removal in Washington state waters of the Salish Sea
- Kyle Antonelis, Daniel Huppert, Don Velasquez, Jeff June
The loss of Dungeness crabs Cancer magister due to lost traps was estimated from catches and mortalities in 24 simulated lost traps in two locations in Washington State. Equal numbers of recreational and commercial crab traps were initially baited and then monitored by divers weekly until the bait was consumed and then bi-weekly for one year. Crabs caught were individually tagged. Catch, escapement, retained catch and mortality rates were estimated. Part of the derelict fishing gear program

Coast Salish and US Geological Survey Tribal Journey Water Quality Project
- Sarah Akin, Eric Grossman
In 2009, the Coast Salish People and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a second water quality study of the Salish Sea to investigate the Coast Salish ancestral waters and the response of its coastal environments to climate change and land use impacts. The ancestral waters comprise a large inland sea contained within the US (Puget Sound) and British Columbia, Canada (Georgia Straits). The Canoe Journey project is a partnership to examine water quality, blending tradition and science.

Derelict Fishing Net Removal in Puget Sound
- Northwest Straits Foundation, Joan Drinkwin, Ginny Broadhurst
Thirty-one days of derelict fishing gear removal operations were conducted from October, 2008 through August, 2009. Removals were conducted in the San Juan archipelago at Lawson’s Reef and off of Lummi, Lopez, and San Juan Islands. One hundred twenty-three (123) derelict gillnets, 8 purse seines, and four crab pots were removed. Nets measured 16.2 acres. More than 8,000 animals were found entangled in the removed gear, including eight dead marine birds and 29 fish. Derelict gear program. Conoco

Ghosts of the Salish Sea: Threats to Marine Birds in Puget Sound and the Northwest Straits from Derelict Fishing Gear
- Thomas P. Good, Jeffrey A. June, Michael A. Etnier, Ginny Broadhurst
Derelict fishing gear—lost or abandoned commercial and recreational fishing nets, lines, pots and traps that sit or float underwater—can remain in the marine environment for years, trapping and killing marine birds. The goal of the analyses is to identify and explore patterns of gear type, condition, orientation and spatiotemporal relationships for the derelict gillnets recovered, particularly with respect to marine birds entangled therein.

Marine Habitat Recovery of Five Derelict Fishing Gear Removal Sites in Puget Sound, Washington
- Natural Resources Consultants, Inc.
This study showed that marine habitat service functions are negatively affected by derelict fishing gear. It showed that natural ocean processes succeed in restoring these service functions within a single growing season after derelict fishing gear removal for areas dominated by kelp. Eelgrass beds take longer to recover, but can improve by 30% in less than a year.

Rates of Marine Species Mortality Caused by Derelict Fishing Nets in Puget Sound, Washington
- Northwest Straits
During the spring and summer of 2007 the Northwest Straits Initiative and Natural Resources Consultants, Inc., began a derelict net monitoring project in Puget Sound, Washington, to study the rates at which derelict gillnets entangle marine animals and the decomposition processes those animals undertake after entanglement. This is one component of the larger derelict fishing gear (derelict gear) program.
